I was raised in the US, Egypt, and Venezuela by my traveling Marine Corps dad and Egyptian mother. Travel is in my blood! Cultural diversity informs my life and my work, and watercolor is the ideal medium for capturing and interpreting the beautiful possibilities around me. I love painting loosely and expressively...yet with an eye towards design. Splatters, splashes, drips, and “mistakes,” find a place of honor in my work. That's been my attitude towards life as well. Let's make something beautiful and wild with whatever comes our way.
I have spent years in front of crowds acting, singing and playing guitar and harmonica (nurturing my inner Neil Young), or preaching and teaching. Soon after being mentored by Alan Morris, a fantastic watercolor artist in Pennsylvania, I began to enjoy showing and selling my work. I was pleasantly surprised to actually take the blue ribbon in my first competitive venture at the North Carolina State Fair. I've been hooked ever since!
I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, a great place for making art.
I deeply admire the work of the late watercolor master, Charles Reid, and am so grateful to have attended his workshop at the Silvermine Arts Center in Connecticut. I aspire to the painterly style of John Singer Sargent. Currently, I'm greatly enjoying following the talented Brazilian watercolorist, Eudes Correia, on Instagram.
